Important HVAC Refrigerant Changes Coming in 2025

Big changes are on the horizon for the HVAC industry, and they could impact homeowners—particularly those with systems over 15 years old. Starting January 1, 2025, the EPA will phase out R-410A refrigerant in new air conditioning systems as part of an effort to reduce greenhouse gases and combat climate change.

What’s Happening?
R-410A refrigerant, the coolant used in most current A/C systems, will no longer be used in new installations after 2024. This change follows the earlier phase-out of R-22 (Freon), which depleted the ozone layer. While R-410A is ozone-friendly, it’s a greenhouse gas. The new refrigerants, such as R-454B and R-32, are more environmentally friendly but come with added costs due to updated safety requirements and technology.

What This Means for Homeowners

  • Older R-22 Systems: Repairs are increasingly costly as the refrigerant becomes scarce. These systems are also less energy-efficient.
  • R-410A Systems: Repairs will remain possible, but new installations with this refrigerant will end in 2024.

Why Act Now?
Waiting to upgrade your system could mean higher costs. New systems using eco-friendly refrigerants are expected to be 10–25% more expensive.
